Chante Moore Clearly Hates Her Friends.

May 6, 2010

At least that’s the message we took from her 1999 single “Chante’s Got a Man” from the album This Moment is Mine.

Ladies, close your eyes and imagine this.  Well, read this first, and then close your eyes and imagine it because it’d be kind of hard to do it the other way around.  Okay.  It’s a Friday night.  You and some of your girlfriends gather together to have a glass of wine or 4 and do some theraputic venting about your man problems.  Love is a battlefield, and sometimes even the mightiest of warriors get weary, and tonight, all you wanna do is find some strength in your girls and forget that men even exist for awhile.

Then the one heiffer in the room with a man stands up and yells, “LATER FOR YOU LONELY B!TCHES, I GOTTA GO HOME AND WATCH LEROY GET BUTT NEKKID AND SCRAMBLE ME SOME EGGS.  BYE!”

That’s pretty much what ‘Chante’s got a Man’ amounts to for us.  She’s just like, “Your man is cheatin’ on you, girl?  Mmph, that’s messed up.  Well, my life is awesome!  My man’s outside, gotta go, bye!”  Sure, she hid a positive “you deserve better than this” message in there, sure but you literally have to look for it between her sounding not too sorry about one of her girlfriends gettin’ beat up by her man and singing out a laundry list of the good sh!t her man does for her.

He always treats me right
We never fight
He sends me flowers
And wines & dines me
Took me home to meet his mama
How he loves me, yeah

…Well hot cookies to you, Chante Moore!!  How ’bout you find another method of consolation, huh?!  We get what she was trying to do, but there’s a big difference between this:

Girlfriend: Girl, my man pushed me last night.
Chante Moore: OMG, that’s horrible!  I am so sorry to hear that!  Keep your head up, girl, there’s good men out there.  You shall find your king.
Girlfriend: Thanks!  I now feel empowered and encouraged!

…And this:

Girlfriend: Girl, my man pushed me last night.
Chante Moore: OMG, that’s horrible!  Leroy picked me a bouquet of summer wildflowers that he grew himself!  In the middle of January!
Girlfriend:
GOOD FOR YOU!  I’M GETTIN MY @SS WHOOPED!!

Her friends probably talked all kinds of bad about her weave when she left the party that night.

You know what? I randomly met her in some record store (you know it was a long time ago) at some point. No one was buying her CD but she was still standing and smiling. I guess it was all too much for the salty single ladies out there.

    • May 6, 2010 5:44 pm

awwww!! that just made my heart frown! 😦 if i had seen her there, i would have bought a cd to be nice.

…if it wasnt for this song, that is. sad times!

Ok first of all, I *really* need to stop reading SplaCent @ work. Having to cover up chortles & snorts w/ coughs and throat clearing is NOT the business.

Secondly, *starts slow hand clap*… you said it all. Her braggadocious attitude irks the hell outta me in this song/video. Esp in that part you quoted.

  5. May 6, 2010 5:51 pm

    HAHAHA!!!

I knew this song was going to make an appearance. And yes, Chante is extra crappy for lauding her man and relationship when the chorus is:

Chante’s got a man at home(I got a man) It hurts me your man’s
leaving you home alone (hurts me to my heart) I can’t help it that your baby
daddy’s creeping out, cheating on ya– (oh, oh, oh) beating on ya-
Chante’s got a man at home (but I got a man at home) and he’s sure good to me.

I’m sure her friends did a whole round of “hoe sit down” after she left, hahaha!

“Good for you b1tch!” Hilarious. And I also noticed this back when the song was hot. Here she is with semi-suicidal sistas crying out for help, while she gloats in their faces?? What kinda friend is that??? But at the time, I thought I was the only one who disagreed with her respone. Glad to know I’m not alone!

    Ms. Brokey?
Why you do this to me? Again? You making me go all “Meshell” here. Bringing up a subject that, on the surface, seems kinda funny, but living oh-so-close underneath are very unpleasant realities?
I didn’t like this when it came out. I like it even less now. Of course the obvious similarities to the scene in Waiting to Exhale are unmistakable; glaring difference being what you’ve already highlighted, i.e., in one the girls were supportive; with Chante she spits in your face.
Waiting to Exhale placed in clear public light the growing struggle for many A/A women and personal relationship possibilities, in a way trying to at least set the women in a place of personal dignity. Chante mocks you in it. One is shared difficulty in life; the other is personal, mean-spirited ridicule. About real-life items that aren’t at all funny anymore.

10 years later I feel more disturbed with this. Because the problem has grown serious in these intervening 10 years. I’m not about to dredge up all the sad, hurtful (well-known) statistics on A/A women, marriage/relationship/baby-momma front. I’m not interested in adding to the pain. Truthfully, though it’s been a boon to my “fetish” preferences, I don’t take any delight in the how and why. Instead, it hurts my heart; because it means your pain and difficulty.
Chante wants to diss on your difficult situation? Today this borders on outright hostile (to me at least). When so many A/A women face the real-life “adventures” of realizing “Nuthin’ but a Brutha” isn’t working out so well, but on the converse, the Interracial has it’s own emotional/social consequences, discovering the difficulty involved in changing her own set expectations of what life would be like.

You’ve hurt me with this one, Ms. Brokey. Only a Jade/SWV/Blaque ménage a trios will make amends.
    Me in the center …
    of course.

  10. May 11, 2010 5:58 pm

    Leave Chante alone :-).

To be clear, there is a difference between being frustrated with a current situation involving a man (or men) and bashing men like the Apaches with the war club on Deadliest Warrior. I can understand supporting your homegirls if they are going though some things but if they are just running their jibs about “N****s ain’t s**t!”…there are more constructive ways to use one’s time, especially if you have a man that is doing the right things.

I truly think that there are men and women out there who hate the opposite gender yet are still out there dating. I didn’t realize it was possible until recently and it opens up so many other avenues.

Plus she was singing about my man Kadeem “Dwayne Wayne” Hardison.

Lol why are we bringing this song up 11 years later? It did sound bad when it came out, but nowadays I’m kind of like Chante. I’m tired of women complaining about their boyfriends/husbands but then just go back to them because they don’t think they can find anyone else or don’t want to have wasted all the work they already put into the one they have. If they don’t have respect for themselves then all the encouraging words you give them fall on deaf ears anyways.

if you’re rich and u wanna help the homeless, which is more productive: goin to a soup kitchen in old sweats, rollin up ur sleeves and doing some hands on work? or rollin down to the soup kitchen in a limo dressed in mink, twirling in a circle and saying LOOK AT MEEEEEEEEEEEEE! YOUR LIFE DOESNT HAVE TO SUCK, LOOK AT MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

Ok first off this “article” is written about a song that is more than ten years old??? Seriously?? You heard that song and thought that she was rubbing your face in the fact that she has a good man and you don’t?? Wow, that is funny so I guess you are gonna write another article on how fake Beyonce is because of her song Independent Ladies now right, of course not. Because to do so would require you to really examine the walking talking contradiction that is Beyonce, and while you have the “journalistic fortitude” to point out the angst you have for song that is eleven years old. You refuse to deal with the truth about Beyonce, she sings about independent women being powerful and self sufficient, but she doesn’t go very far from telling them that they have to shake thier tails in order to get ahead. What a message to give to young women, and apparently it has worked because many will do just that, and wind up settling. How about this..If your girl got a good man, how about doing what it takes to get one, having some self respect ladies, as opposed to doing the easy thing hating on the woman because she really actually has grown up, and gotten herself together, thinking that she is more than just T&A.
And as for you brokeymcpoverty how about writing something real for a change, something that will actually make our people think of something deeper than just “who got a good man and who doesn’t”.

No, no no. “Single Ladies” is a metaphor for the job market.

      “Single” really means “college educated.”

“If you liked it means” “if you thought I was qualified for the position I was interviewing for,” and “Put a ring on it” means “hired me and given a me an annual salary comparable to that of a male doing the same job. Plus benefits.”

How did you not get that?

    • May 17, 2010 3:31 pm

      ROTFL.

okay, i’m still refusing to tell anyone that this is a joke/jest/foolishment because i want to continue believing in the ability of the human brain to pick up on some things. so i’m not gonna do that.

i will point out the following though:

this entire blog began with the discussion of old songs. that’s the foundation. coming here and complaining about posts being about old songs is like opening up a U.S. History book and being mad because they only talk about sh!t that already happened. lol.

i will also say that this blog has an entire series in which r&b groups are put against each other in pretend battles to the death. …”making people think” is on our to-do list, right below discussing the political implications of Cameo’s Codpiece.

thanks for reading! come back soon! we love you!

  19. May 17, 2010 1:54 pm

I do think songs like this make the women who have had major difficulty with love, hate love. This could even be the reason (and I have to specify this) why there are some black women who fight over men. I also mean to mention how friends could be going for the same man, because the friend wants to be treated the same way, and so they will sleep with another woman’s man. That’s honestly why it wouldn’t pay to speak on all the good a man does for you. Women should make it a habit to keep that on their mind without discussing it so much so. To keep a man that you feel treats you right, you definitely have to protect your neck. If not, you could end up getting double crossed by the man and someone you thought was your friend.

Can I quote you? : “(Brokey) babe keep up the great work that you do, you know you cant please everybody everyday smebodys gonna hate its society 2day babe i got mad love 4 you your (blog) is on point”

    Ms. Brokey,
I feel totally at fault here. Thinking it was possible to combine the serious-ridiculous. My Mighty Bad! Guess I threw the ol’ wrench into it this time. So sorry. I didn’t intend to be a disruptive element to your site. Or offend sensibilities.

“D” had it down though, about how the responses are getting funnier than the original. Maybe you let it ride out, see if you can max this out with over 100 Comments, your all-time most popular post. When “D” hit up on the “Shaquann” (we all go “Cheetara!!!!!”), I fell out of my chair!

“Jonathan” ripped the sheets off though. Reading comprehension, understanding of parity or the serious-yet-satirical isn’t in everybody’s toolbox Ms. Brokey. I leave it you to figure out what “our people(s)” level might be; I ain’t qualified to comment.

Do feel completely free though to blame the whole thing on me. I thought I could straddle that line between something somewhat serious co-mingled with the humor. I am gravely mistaken. I am quite sure I’m the most appropriate one to cast as the cause of all the trouble; primary reason being I am the Devil incarnate, the most blame-worthy, reprehensible human around, the all-evil White Privileged Male. I MUST be at fault! My self-loathing of my cushy life Demands I hate myself for this and accept all the reproach for the sins I represent. Please, Please, cleanse my soul Ms. Brokey, by hating me for this. Yell in my face “SEE!! This is why I’d NEVA’ date a 2520!!!!!” It will feel so comfortingly familiar, purifying the conscience.
